The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert @ Austrian Film Museum
Director, script: Stephan Elliott; Cinematography: Brian J. Breheny; Music: Guy Gross; Starring: Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce, Bill Hunter. 35mm, Color, 103 min
A couple of drag performers (Weaving, Pearce) and a transgender person (Stamp) travel across rural Australian Outback to spread the gospel of LGBTQ among homophobic desert dwellers, fueled by the eternal disco tunes by Village People, Gloria Gaynor, Patti Page and (of course) Abba. Without a doubt the most melodramatic, baroque and colourful road-movie ever, Priscilla first hit Cannes film festival like a tornado, to become an international sleeper hit and a cross-dressing cult classic. In the immortal words of Terence Stamp’s Felicia: “That’s just what this country needs: a cock in a frock on a rock.”
Language: Original Version (English) with German and French subtitles
